Tashi Malik

Picture
Tashi Malik is one half of the world’s first twin-duo to scale Mount Everest. She achieved this feat with sister Nungshi, on May 19th 2013. She considers herself truly Indian, having studied in over ten schools and lived in far-flung corners of the country while her father served in the army. Tashi was born on June 21, 1991.

Through school Tashi excelled in hockey, track and field events, table-tennis, basketball and badminton. She also performed spectacularly in academics. She got her Bachelors in Journalism degree through Sikkim Manipal University’s distance learning programme. During graduation Tashi’s father, Col VS Malik, signed her up at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi. This is where she was inspired to take-up mountaineering professionally.

At the moment Tashi hopes to set a record by climbing the seven major summits of the world with her sister. Five of these remain, after her successful Mt. Everest and Mt. Kilimanjaro bids. Since encountering Pakistan’s first woman climber to the Everest, Samina Baig, and summiting with her, Tashi has become serious about working towards gender equality causes, and bilateral peace.

Tashi has the humanitarian qualifications to back-up this ambition. While studying journalism, she was sent to Vermont, USA, for a short ‘Conflict Transformation Across Cultures’ (CONTACT) programme.  In 2011 she attended a workshop on volunteerism, the ‘South Asia Peace Workshop’, a CONTACT SAARC Course in Sri Lanka, and another Certificate Programme in Peace-building in Rwanda.

Tashi moved to Dehradun, with her family, to be closer to the major sites for mountaineering. Her lineage is mixed with her mother’s Gorkha, and father’s Haryanvi Jat, roots. She’s technologically proficient, and takes care of all social networking commitments on behalf of the twins. She enjoys the sights and sounds of picturesque Doon valley, and loves taking scenic drives with her sister Nungshi.

Nungshi Malik

Nungshi Malik is the world’s first twin, along with her sister, to scale Mount Everest. Born on June 21, 1991, she has lived in several stations within India during her father’s tenure with the Indian Army. She has studied in at least 10 schools, excelling in academics alongside sports. On May 19th 2013, she summited the Everest.

Though Nungshi performed outstandingly in sports – even representing Lawrence School Lovedale at national and regional sub-junior hockey tourneys – she never intended to become a professional mountaineer. She was declared the best athlete for her school in consecutive years. While completing her Bachelors in Journalism through a distance learning programme her father, Col VS Malik, enrolled the sisters at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi, as a part of their overall learning. Unforeseen to anyone, Nungshi found her calling here.

Nungshi is currently on a mission to climb the seven major summits of the world – of which five remain after her successful Mt. Everest and Mt. Kilimanjaro bids. Alongside, she hopes to engage in community building activities with an aim to create value for society.

Nungshi has impressive humanitarian qualifications. While studying journalism, she flew to Vermont, USA, to enrol for a short ‘Conflict Transformation Across Cultures’ (CONTACT) programme.  In 2011 she attended a workshop on volunteerism, the ‘South Asia Peace Workshop’, a CONTACT SAARC Course in Sri Lanka, and the following year attended the Certificate Programme in Peace-building in Rwanda. Not surprisingly, she aspires to work for the UN.

Nungshi currently resides in Dehradun, where her parents relocated to for the sake of the twins’ mountaineering career. She loves the city’s proximity to nature, its famous cream-rolls, and scenic hideaways.
